Cavanaugh scores 30 points to lead Colonials past the Flyers

Tyler Cavanaugh tied a career high with six three-pointers and scored 30 points, and George Washington snapped Dayton’s nine-game winning streak with an 87-81 victory at Smith Center on Saturday night.
Cavanaugh added eight rebounds for the Colonials (18-13, 10-8 Atlantic 10), who ended their regular season with five straight wins. Yuta Watanabe added 18 points and six rebounds, and Jair Bolden scored 12.
George Washington raced to a 16-1 lead, capped by Cavanaugh’s layup with 16:08 left in the first half.
Dayton (24-6, 15-3), the conference’s regular season champion, trailed 50-33 at the break and 70-51 midway through the second half but scored 11 straight points to pull within eight at 70-62 with 7:54 left.
Scoochie Smith’s three-point play cut it to 82-77 with 26 seconds remaining and a layup from Xeyrius Williams 15 seconds later made it 85-81, but the Flyers wouldn’t get closer.
Kendall Pollard led Dayton with 24 points on 8-for-10 shooting.
VCU 72, GEORGE MASON 60: Justin Tillman scored 24 points on 12-for-15 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds, and the Rams beat the Patriots in Richmond in the teams’ regular season finale, snapping a two-game skid. Jordan Burgess scored 11 points and Jonathan Williams 10 for Virginia Commonwealth (24-7, 14-4), which locked up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Conference tournament.
Marquise Moore had 17 points for George Mason (19-12, 9-9), which entered tied for sixth place in the conference standings.
RICHMOND 72, SAINT LOUIS 62: Senior T.J. Cline had a triple-double, freshman De’Monte Buckingham scored a careerhigh 23 points and the host Spiders turned back the Billikens to end their regular season.
Cline scored 19 points with 12 assists and 11 rebounds for his second triple-double of the season. He has the only triple-doubles in school history.
Buckingham hit 7 of 9 shots, including all four of his threepointers, and went 5 for 5 from the foul line for Richmond (19-11, 13-5 Atlantic 10).
Mike Crawford had 19 points and Elliott Welmer added 17 with eight rebounds for Saint Louis (11-20, 6-12).
