Ca­vanaugh scores 30 points to lead Colo­nials past the Fly­ers

Tyler Ca­vanaugh tied a ca­reer high with six three-point­ers and scored 30 points, and Ge­orge Wash­ing­ton snapped Day­ton’s nine-game win­ning streak with an 87-81 vic­tory at Smith Cen­ter on Satur­day night.

Ca­vanaugh added eight re­bounds for the Colo­nials (18-13, 10-8 At­lantic 10), who ended their reg­u­lar sea­son with five straight wins. Yuta Watan­abe added 18 points and six re­bounds, and Jair Bolden scored 12.

Ge­orge Wash­ing­ton raced to a 16-1 lead, capped by Ca­vanaugh’s layup with 16:08 left in the first half.

Day­ton (24-6, 15-3), the con­fer­ence’s reg­u­lar sea­son cham­pion, trailed 50-33 at the break and 70-51 mid­way through the sec­ond half but scored 11 straight points to pull within eight at 70-62 with 7:54 left.

Scoochie Smith’s three-point play cut it to 82-77 with 26 sec­onds re­main­ing and a layup from Xeyrius Wil­liams 15 sec­onds later made it 85-81, but the Fly­ers wouldn’t get closer.

Ken­dall Pol­lard led Day­ton with 24 points on 8-for-10 shoot­ing.

VCU 72, GE­ORGE MA­SON 60: Justin Till­man scored 24 points on 12-for-15 shoot­ing and grabbed 11 re­bounds, and the Rams beat the Pa­tri­ots in Rich­mond in the teams’ reg­u­lar sea­son fi­nale, snap­ping a two-game skid. Jor­dan Burgess scored 11 points and Jonathan Wil­liams 10 for Vir­ginia Com­mon­wealth (24-7, 14-4), which locked up the No. 2 seed in the up­com­ing At­lantic 10 Con­fer­ence tournament.

Mar­quise Moore had 17 points for Ge­orge Ma­son (19-12, 9-9), which en­tered tied for sixth place in the con­fer­ence stand­ings.

RICH­MOND 72, SAINT LOUIS 62: Se­nior T.J. Cline had a triple-dou­ble, fresh­man De’Monte Buck­ing­ham scored a ca­reer­high 23 points and the host Spi­ders turned back the Bil­likens to end their reg­u­lar sea­son.

Cline scored 19 points with 12 as­sists and 11 re­bounds for his sec­ond triple-dou­ble of the sea­son. He has the only triple-dou­bles in school his­tory.

Buck­ing­ham hit 7 of 9 shots, in­clud­ing all four of his three­p­oint­ers, and went 5 for 5 from the foul line for Rich­mond (19-11, 13-5 At­lantic 10).

Mike Craw­ford had 19 points and El­liott Welmer added 17 with eight re­bounds for Saint Louis (11-20, 6-12).
