Hav­ing met with the Rus­sian am­bas­sador in the course of the pres­i­den­tial elec­tion and hav­ing tes­ti­fied that no part of the con­ver­sa­tion re­lated to the elec­tion, he could po­ten­tially be black­mailed by an un­scrupu­lous Rus­sian gov­ern­ment with the threat of re­veal­ing that what he had tes­ti­fied was un­true — whether it was true or not.
