Dangerous sinkhole stops expanding
A sinkhole that swallowed a boat and destroyed two homes has stopped growing, officials said Saturday, adding that they will monitor it over the weekend before determining when cleanup can begin.
The hole has been stagnant since Friday afternoon, said Kevin Guthrie, Pasco County assistant administrator for public safety. He confirmed that the hole, which is 250 feet wide and 50 feet deep, is the largest in three decades in the county.
Dramatic video showed a home in Land O’ Lakes, Fla., collapsing into the hole Friday morning. The hole quickly engulfed one home and a boat and then consumed about 80 percent of another home.
Guthrie said 11 homes have been affected. No injuries have been reported. 3 dead in senior center fire: Three people died Saturday after an early morning fire tore through a senior living complex in Chesapeake, Va., fire officials said. The fire hit three of five buildings at Chesapeake Crossing Senior Community Apartments. The Chesapeake Fire Department said six people — including two firefighters — were taken to the hospital with injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
