Dan­ger­ous sink­hole stops ex­pand­ing

A sink­hole that swal­lowed a boat and de­stroyed two homes has stopped grow­ing, of­fi­cials said Satur­day, adding that they will mon­i­tor it over the weekend be­fore de­ter­min­ing when cleanup can be­gin.

The hole has been stag­nant since Fri­day af­ter­noon, said Kevin Guthrie, Pasco County as­sis­tant ad­min­is­tra­tor for pub­lic safety. He con­firmed that the hole, which is 250 feet wide and 50 feet deep, is the largest in three decades in the county.

Dra­matic video showed a home in Land O’ Lakes, Fla., col­laps­ing into the hole Fri­day morning. The hole quickly en­gulfed one home and a boat and then con­sumed about 80 per­cent of another home.

Guthrie said 11 homes have been af­fected. No in­juries have been re­ported. 3 dead in se­nior cen­ter fire: Three peo­ple died Satur­day af­ter an early morning fire tore through a se­nior liv­ing com­plex in Chesapeake, Va., fire of­fi­cials said. The fire hit three of five build­ings at Chesapeake Cross­ing Se­nior Com­mu­nity Apart­ments. The Chesapeake Fire Depart­ment said six peo­ple — in­clud­ing two fire­fight­ers — were taken to the hos­pi­tal with in­juries. The cause of the fire re­mains un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion.
