The best deterrent against hate crimes

The Washington Post Sunday - - SUNDAY OPINION -

Regarding the July 12 Metro article “Hate-based incidents surge in Md. county”:

Society’s response to these hate-based incidents only serves to encourage the perpetrators. Instead of reacting with fear and outrage — which is what the perpetrators want — we should call these people out for what they are: bullies who hide behind the cloak of anonymity to proclaim their contemptible views, without having the courage to defend them publicly. A display of public contempt might be more effective than any other response in discouraging these actions. Nancy Stanley, Washington
