10-year-old girl’s death ruled homicide

The Washington Post Sunday - - COMMUTER -

The case of a 10-year-old girl who died of head injuries she suffered a decade before has been declared a homicide, Prince George’s County police said.

Elanis Milfort was 6 months old when she was the victim of child abuse and suffered headinjury trauma on June 8, 2006, police said.

In March 2016, Elanis died three days after undergoing spinal surgery connected to the injuries she sustained as an infant, police said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in the District determined last month that the girl’s death was a homicide, police said.

It is unclear why there was a delay between the girl’s death and the homicide ruling.

Her father, Lionel Milfort, was convicted of child abuse and served a prison sentence, from which he was released in 2014.

The Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s office is screening the case to determine whether he should face additional charges in the girl's death, police said.
