Woman pleads guilty in beat­ing death

A 67-year-old District woman Fri­day pleaded guilty to fa­tally beat­ing her 63-year-old boyfriend with a base­ball bat in her North­east Wash­ing­ton apart­ment this year.

Thoma­sine Ben­nett pleaded guilty to vol­un­tary man­slaugh­ter in the Feb. 17 death of Wal­ter M. Clark, whose body was found in the hall­way closet of her apart­ment in the 700 block of 21st Street NE in the Carver Langston neigh­bor­hood.

Po­lice were called to Ben­nett’s apart­ment to in­ves­ti­gate a call about trou­ble in­side the res­i­dence. While in the apart­ment, po­lice dis­cov­ered Clark’s body curled up and cov­ered with mul­ti­ple bruises. The closet door had been bar­ri­caded with a two-by-four.

An au­topsy re­vealed Clark died from mul­ti­ple force trauma. Ben­nett has re­mained in the D.C. jail since her ar­rest.

Ben­nett is sched­uled to be sen­tenced Sept. 22 by Judge Jose M. Lopez, should the judge agree to ac­cept Ben­nett’s plea deal.

As part of the plea agree­ment, Ben­nett faces 10 years in prison.
