Jackson hits milestone as Cardinals hand Cavaliers third defeat in four games
Lamar Jackson accounted for four touchdowns, and host Louisville’s defense posted one of its best efforts of the season to beat Virginia, 38-21, on Saturday.
The Cardinals (6-4, 3-3 ACC) returned from a bye to outgain the Cavaliers 493-277. Virginia (6-4, 3-3) managed just 115 yards after halftime.
Jackson became the first player in NCAA history to post two seasons with 1,000 yards rushing and 3,000 yards passing. The junior threw for 195 yards and three touchdowns, two to Jaylen Smith.
The Cavaliers, who lost for the third time in four games, trailed only 17-14 at halftime. But the offense stalled until Jordan Ellis’s three-yard touchdown run late in the game. They also allowed four sacks and committed two turnovers leading to 10 points.
OLD DOMINION 37, FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL 30: Steven Williams passed for two touchdowns and Ray Lawry rushed for a pair of scores as the Monarchs (4-6, 2-4 Conference USA) held off the Golden Panthers (6-3, 4-2) in Miami.
HOWARD 28, NORFOLK STATE 24: Caylin Newton scored on a two-yard run with five seconds left to give the Bison their fifth straight win, a victory over the Spartans at Greene Stadium.
Dezmond Wortham scored on a three-yard run to cut Howard’s deficit to 24-21. After the defense forced Norfolk State (3-7, 3-4 MEAC) to punt, Newton led Howard (7-3, 6-1) on a 12-play, 89-yard drive for the winning score.
DELAWARE STATE 33, MORGAN STATE 30: Keenan Black tossed a touchdown pass to Trey Gross with nine seconds left, then threw for the two-point conversion to give the Hornets (2-8, 2-6 MEAC) a win over the Bears (1-9, 1-6) in Dover, Del.
JAMES MADISON 20, RICHMOND 13: Trai Sharp scored the go-ahead touchdown with 44 seconds left, and the Dukes extended their winning streak to 22 with a victory over the Spiders in Harrisonburg, Va.
The Dukes (10-0, 7-0 CAA) called Sharp’s number on seven of 10 plays in their go-ahead, 71-yard drive. Sharp capped the surge with a seven-yard run to inch past the Spiders (5-5, 3-4).
TOWSON 26, WILLIAM AND MARY 14: Coby Tippett returned a punt 62 yards for a score, and Towson (4-6, 2-5 CAA) shut out the Tribe (2-8, 0-7) in the second half in Williamsburg, Va.
BUCKNELL 12, GEORGETOWN 0: The Hoyas (1-9, 0-5 Patriot League) managed just eight first downs in a loss to the Bison (5-5, 2-3) in Lewisburg, Pa.
CATHOLIC 33, MAINE MARITIME 14: Led by three passing touchdowns by Brady Berger, the Cardinals (5-5) beat the Mariners (1-8) in Castine, Maine.
SUNY MARITIME 54, GALLAUDET 14: The Privateers (9-1, 6-1 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference) raced to a 40-0 halftime lead to handle the Bison (3-7, 3-4) in Throggs Neck, N.Y.
