Modern Luxury, owner of DC magazine, buys Capitol File

The writing was on the wall months ago when Capitol File, the glossy Washington magazine, lost both its publisher and its top editor within weeks.

Now Modern Luxury, the publishing company that owns several regional magazines nationwide, including DC magazine, has purchased Capitol File along with all GreenGale titles in an expansion deal that chief executive Michael Dickey said “took years to do.”

“Our goal is to keep all the magazines up and running and to increase sales staff and editorial staff in those markets,” Dickey told the New York Post before adding that “synergies” (are those like “redundancies”?) might exist on the back end.

“The luxury market,” he said, “remains very strong.”

Capitol File had seemed on shaky ground since 2015, when then-editor in chief Elizabeth Thorpe was ousted in a reorganization spearheaded by then-owner Niche Media, which rebranded as GreenGale.

The terms of Modern Luxury’s purchase of GreenGale have not been disclosed, but the sale includes Hamptons, Gotham, Ocean Drive, L.A. Confidential and other regional glossies.
