Mother giraffe dies at Maryland Zoo
For the second time this year, a giraffe has died at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore.
Juma, a 5-year-old mother giraffe, died Tuesday night from an unknown illness, officials said. She leaves behind a 9month-old calf named Willow.
Officials with the zoo said Juma had been “under intense care” after she developed severe gastrointestinal problems earlier this year.
Even with treatment, she kept having issues.
“We are devastated that despite these efforts we were not able to turn her around,” Ellen Bronson, director of animal health, said in a statement.
