Vote to avoid Europe’s fate

The Washington Times Daily - - Opinion -

The United States was founded and has flourished based on the declaration that the Creator, not government, grants all people the unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Government was created by man to secure these rights.

Since the nation’s founding, the federal government has followed a natural tendency to expand in size and power, while diminishing individual liberty. The government almost always justifies usurpation of individual liberty by saying it is pursuing the collective good.

While the cancer of collective thinking first took hold during the Progressive movement of the early 1900s, it was unable to metastasize until the Great Depression resulted in the implementation of New Deal legislation (supposedly for the collective good). Forgotten is the fact that World War II, rather than New Deal policies, led us out of economic depression.

Since that time, individual liberty has been assaulted by Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, Jimmy Carter’s formation of the Education and Energy departments and now President Obama’s desire to fundamentally transform America.

Americans do not have to wonder whether the surrendering of individual liberty for the collective good is beneficial. We need only to look at the results of this experiment in Europe.

Has universal health care worked in Europe? Has the tyranny of the green movement been good for its people? Have public unions acted in their best interests? Has income redistribution resulted in prosperity?

The answer to all of these questions is no. European health care is riddled with rationed care and poor service. Industry is stifled by unreasonable environmental regulations. Public unions have raided the public coffers, causing massive government debt and European income redistribution has all but eliminated entrepreneurship, dooming the European Union to bankruptcy, street riots and economic misery.

Current U.S. policies put us on track to follow the downward spiral of Europe, but turnaround is still possible. November is your time America, so choose wisely. MIKE FERREER Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
