Cabr­era out at least a week with bro­ken bone near eye

LAKE­LAND, FLA. | Detroit Tigers third base­man Miguel Cabr­era has a bro­ken bone be­low his right eye af­ter be­ing struck by a bad-hop grounder, sidelin­ing the star slug­ger for at least a week with Open­ing Day on deck.

The AL Cen­tral cham­pi­ons start April 5 at home against Bos­ton, giv­ing Cabr­era less than 21/ weeks to re­cover. Cabr­era switched from first base to third af­ter Detroit signed Prince Fielder this off­sea­son. He last played third base in 2008, when he started 14 games for the Tigers.

New York Yan­kees short­stop Derek Jeter re­mained out of the lineup due to a stiff left calf. Jeter was not in the posted lineup for Tues­day night’s game against Pitts­burgh and is not on the travel ros­ter for Wed­nes­day’s game with Tampa Bay at Port Char­lotte.

Catcher Nick Hund­ley and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a $9 mil­lion, three-year con­tract. Hund­ley hit .288 with nine homers and 29 RBI in 82 games last sea­son.
