Cabrera out at least a week with broken bone near eye
LAKELAND, FLA. | Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera has a broken bone below his right eye after being struck by a bad-hop grounder, sidelining the star slugger for at least a week with Opening Day on deck.
The AL Central champions start April 5 at home against Boston, giving Cabrera less than 21/ weeks to recover. Cabrera switched from first base to third after Detroit signed Prince Fielder this offseason. He last played third base in 2008, when he started 14 games for the Tigers.
New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter remained out of the lineup due to a stiff left calf. Jeter was not in the posted lineup for Tuesday night’s game against Pittsburgh and is not on the travel roster for Wednesday’s game with Tampa Bay at Port Charlotte.
Catcher Nick Hundley and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a $9 million, three-year contract. Hundley hit .288 with nine homers and 29 RBI in 82 games last season.
