Hankerson surgery confirms ACL tear

The Washington Times Daily - - Weather -

Redskins wide receiver Leonard Hankerson had surgery Thursday to repair torn lateral collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee.

The torn ACL was suspected by doctors, but not confirmed until surgery. According to Washington coach Mike Shanahan, that ligament had a 90 percent tear. Hankerson was injured during the second quarter of Sunday’s 24-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and will not return this season. His rehabilitation program is expected to last seven to nine months, Shanahan said. That likely means Hankerson would miss the team’s entire offseason program.

“It’s a huge blow any time you lose one of your better players,” Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. “Hank is a guy we really rely on in certain situations and I felt strongly that he’s been getting a lot better.”

Hankerson began the year in a competition with teammate Josh Morgan for the starting spot at the “Z” receiver position and quickly took control of that role. A third-round pick in 2011, Hankerson finished with 30 receptions for 375 yards and three touchdowns. But his offensive coordinator saw him hit “another level” in the three games before facing the Eagles.

“I was pretty disappointed for [Hankerson],” Kyle Shanahan said. “Because you know he’s put in a lot of work. I know he wanted to get those numbers and to show everybody what he’s capable of. With getting hurt, obviously doesn’t get a chance to do that. He’ll come back next year and he’ll be healthy, but it’s always tough when you lose a good player.”

The Redskins signed wide receiver Lance Lewis from the practice squad to replace Hankerson on the active 53-man roster.

An undrafted college free agent from East Carolina, Lewis made an impression during training camp. The 24-year-old was a late cut in training camp in 2012 and again this season, before being added to the practice squad on Sept. 1. It’s uncertain if he would be active for

Monday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Washington signed wide receiver Josh Bellamy, 24, to the practice squad to replace Lewis.
