Female protesters receive heavy prison sentences

The Washington Times Daily - - World -

CAIRO | Authorities took a heavy hand Wednesday handed down heavy prison sentences to female supporters of the ousted Islamist president — including teenagers as young as 15 — and ordered the detention of two-dozen secular activists, all for protesting.

The moves mark what critics say is a determination by the militarybacked government to silence dissent, continuing a crackdown on Islamists since the military’s July 3 ouster of President Mohammed Morsi and suppressing secular activists who accuse new leaders of restoring an autocratic system.
