Duterte: Sup­port­ive Trump made him feel ‘like a saint’

MANILA | Philip­pines Pres­i­dent Ro­drigo Duterte said Wed­nes­day he felt “like a saint” af­ter his phone con­ver­sa­tion last week with Pres­i­dent-elect Don­ald Trump, who he said praised him for “do­ing great” in his vi­o­lent and widely crit­i­cized cam­paign against il­le­gal drugs.

Mr. Trump in­vited him for cof­fee if he vis­its Wash­ing­ton or New York, and said he wanted to hear how Mr. Duterte deals with the me­dia and his crit­ics, ac­cord­ing to the Philip­pine pres­i­dent’s ac­count.

“Oh Pres­i­dent Duterte, we should fix our bad re­la­tions,” he quoted Trump as say­ing. “If you lis­ten to Trump talk to me, I have be­come like a saint.”

In ear­lier com­ments about the phone call, Mr. Duterte said Mr. Trump hoped his drug crack­down would suc­ceed, and said he as­sured the U.S. pres­i­dent-elect the Philip­pines would main­tain its ties with Amer­ica — a de­par­ture from Mr. Duterte’s hos­til­ity to­ward the Obama ad­min­is­tra­tion.
