United sec­ond-year player re­tires be­cause of salary

Luke Mishu has re­tired from D.C. United af­ter two sea­sons.

Mishu told The Wash­ing­ton Post he was re­tir­ing from soc­cer to pur­sue busi­ness op­por­tu­ni­ties, cit­ing that he had to be “re­al­is­tic” given his salary in Ma­jor League Soc­cer. As an un­drafted re­serve, Mishu was mak­ing $62,500.

The 25-year-old Mishu told The Post: “I felt like I could play un­til I was 30-what­ever, but I didn’t want to leave the league need­ing to get an en­trylevel job.” He ap­peared in seven games this sea­son, start­ing five.

Mishu, from Knoxville, Ten­nessee, played at Notre Dame.
