Sus­pect in po­lice of­fi­cer shoot­ings con­firmed dead

Law en­force­ment con­firmed Thurs­day that the man ac­cused of shoot­ing two Ge­or­gia po­lice of­fi­cers is dead, end­ing a 24-hour man­hunt.

Of­fi­cials said Min­quell Lem­brick, 32, shot and killed him­self af­ter po­lice sur­rounded the Amer­i­cus home where he had holed up Thurs­day morn­ing. Po­lice re­ceived a tip he might be hid­ing in­side the home and had sur­rounded it.

He was ac­cused of killing Amer­i­cus po­lice Of­fi­cer Ni­cholas Smarr and crit­i­cally wound­ing Of­fi­cer Jody Smith of Ge­or­gia South­west­ern State Uni­ver­sity on Wed­nes­day when they re­sponded to a do­mes­tic dis­tur­bance call at an apart­ment com­plex near the uni­ver­sity.
