Jerusalem mayor hopes Trump will move U.S. Embassy to city
JERUSALEM | Jerusalem’s mayor said Tuesday he’s confident Donald Trump will move the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Mayor Nir Barkat said conversations with Mr. Trump’s staff have led him to believe the president-elect is serious about the move.
Transferring the embassy to Jerusalem would be a highly symbolic and politically charged act. Virtually all embassies to Israel are located in or around Tel Aviv. Israel captured east Jerusalem in 1967 and annexed it in a move that is not internationally recognized. It claims the entire city as its capital.
Palestinians seek east Jerusalem, home to key Jewish, Muslim and Christian holy sites, as the capital of their future state.
