Euro­pean law­mak­ers crit­i­cize re­stric­tive new laws in Poland

WAR­SAW | Poland came un­der tough scru­tiny at the Euro­pean Par­lia­ment in Strasbourg, France, on Wed­nes­day, with crit­ics of the pop­ulist rul­ing gov­ern­ment de­nounc­ing what they con­sider an ero­sion of rule of law in the coun­try.

It was the body’s fourth de­bate on the state of democ­racy in Poland since that coun­try’s pop­ulist Law and Jus­tice party won elec­tions last year. Un­der Chair­man Jaroslaw Kaczyn­ski, the party has im­posed greater con­trol over state me­dia and pros­e­cu­tors.
