Dismal Swamp Canal remains closed after hurricane damage

The Washington Times Daily - - METRO -

Virginia’s Great Dismal Swamp Canal has been closed indefinitely as crews work to clean up damage from Hurricane Matthew.

The Army Corps of Engineers said in a recent news release that the canal still needs to be dredged and trees and debris need to be removed.

The canal, which is where the neighborhood drains, was closed in October due to extensive damage from the hurricane.

WAVY-TV reported that) it rose two feet higher than normal elevation during the storm.

The Lake Drummond Reservation facilities also were damaged and remain closed for repairs.

Officials with the Norfolk District of the Army Corps have requested federal funds to help with storm-related work.
