Lib­erty Univer­sity plans on-cam­pus shoot­ing range

Of­fi­cials at the evan­gel­i­cal Lib­erty Univer­sity are plan­ning to open a state-of-the-art shoot­ing range on cam­pus next fall.

Univer­sity pres­i­dent Jerry Fal­well Jr. tells The Wash­ing­ton Post that the new com­plex will fea­ture pis­tol, ri­fle, shot­gun and archery fa­cil­i­ties built into the moun­tain­side of the cam­pus near Lynchburg.

The univer­sity al­lows stu­dents, fac­ulty and staff to carry con­cealed hand­guns on cam­pus.

Mr. Fal­well says more than 1,600 peo­ple have taken a free course es­tab­lished last year for those in­ter­ested in earn­ing a Vir­ginia con­cealed carry per­mit.

He says only 20 stu­dents have re­ceived the proper doc­u­men­ta­tion from the state po­lice.

WDBJ-TV re­ports the Camp­bell County Board of Su­per­vi­sors will have a fi­nal say on the school’s per­mit re­quest af­ter a pub­lic hear­ing, which is sched­uled for Jan. 3.
