Bearing Arms ‘audit’: Everytown ‘school shootings’ mostly aren’t

An intellectual “audit” of Everytown For Gun Safety has revealed a definition of “school shooting” that includes everything from negligent discharges to suicide.

The Townhall Media-affiliated website Bearing Arms recently researched over 200 “school shootings” cited by Everytown, which is largely funded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Writer Bob Owens decided to undergo the project after seeing a Dec. 15 Huffington Post article that took the numbers at face value.

“We decided that it was time to take a hard look at the claimed school shootings,” Mr. Owens wrote.

Bearing Arms then went through every school shooting tallied by Everytown, linked to local news reports and provided a count of “lies” for readers to consider.

Some of the site’s findings include: ● Everytown qualified gang activity near but not on a school campus in Chicago as a school shooting.

● Negligently discharged weapons during the cleaning process — where no one was hurt — were considered school shootings.

● The negligent discharge by a school janitor who found a gun on campus was deemed a school shooting.

● A man followed his estranged wife into a school parking lot and killed her, but Everytown listed it as a school shooting.

The website concluded that of 203 incidents since 2013 chronicled by Everytown, “only 44 meet the common perception of a school shooting, where someone came to a school campus to shoot faculty, staff, or students.”
