Chaffetz: Flynn may have to return Russian payments

The Washington Times Daily - - POLITICS - — Seth McLaughlin

The chairman of the House Oversight Committee said Monday that former National Security

Adviser Michael Flynn could have to pay back the tens of thousands of dollars that he has received from Russia and Turkey.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that the committee is looking into whether Mr. Flynn violated a law that requires retired military officers to receive permission before accepting payments from foreign entities.

“As a former military officer, you are required by law [to seek permission] if you are going to take payments directly from these countries. You have to not only seek, but you have to get permissions from the secretary of state [and] from the secretary of defense,” the Utah Republican said.

Mr. Chaffetz also rejected President Trump’s characterization of the congressional investigations into the possible collusion between his 2016 presidential campaign and Russia as a “witch hunt,” and shot down the idea that Mr. Flynn should receive immunity for his testimony before the House and Senate intelligence committees that are leading the probe.
