Redskins, Pro Bowl LB Brown agree to deal

The Redskins defense got better Monday when the team reached a deal with Pro Bowl linebacker Zach Brown, one of the top free agents left on the market.

Brown still has to pass his physical but his agent, Michael J. Katz, confirmed that the two sides had agreed to terms.

Brown had his best season last year, his fifth in the NFL, in Buffalo. The 6-foot1, 244-pound inside linebacker made 149 combined tackles, which put him second overall in the league behind Seattle’s Bobby Wagner (167). Brown started all 16 games last season for the Bills and also had four sacks, one interception and two forced fumbles.

Brown had explored re-signing in Buffalo, according to multiple reports, and had also visited the Raiders, among other teams. Brown, 27, played on a oneyear deal worth $1.25 million last year in Buffalo.

Before signing with the Bills, Brown spent the first four years of his career with the Titans, who drafted him in the second round in 2012. He was productive as a rookie and a second-year player but after a pectoral injury in 2014 and an unproductive season in 2015, took his chances with the Bills last year to try to improve his stock.

While terms of the deal were not disclosed, the Redskins had around $11 million in salary cap space before news of the deal broke. Brown played his way to a salary bump though, with his signing coming so late in free agency, it’s clear that his market wasn’t he wanted it to be, which would have given the Redskins some leverage in negotiations.
