States that have legalized recreational or medical marijuana could have a better idea by late July how the Justice Department will handle marijuana enforcement under the Trump administration.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a memo Wednesday indicating that initial recommendations from the department’s new task force on crime reduction and public safety are due July 27.

The task force is expected to identify ways to reduce violent crime and illegal immigration and, as part of that undertaking, is evaluating existing policy in numerous areas — including enforcement, charging, sentencing and asset forfeiture.
