Haley berates U.N. rights council, demands reforms

GENEVA | The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations on Tuesday berated the organization’s top human rights body, calling it a “forum for politics, hypocrisy and evasion” that allows rights abusers to whitewash their images and foes of Israel to criticize the Jewish state unfairly.

Nikki Haley, in the first visit to the Human Rights Council by America’s top diplomat at the U.N., trained most of her focus on abuses by Venezuela, following up with more criticism later at an academic forum in Geneva, where she dangled the possibility that the U.S. could quit the council.

“In case after case, it has been a forum for politics, hypocrisy and evasion, not the forum for conscience that its founders envisioned,” she said at the Graduate Institute. “If it fails to change, then we must pursue the advancement of human rights outside the council.”
