Age 83

Wil­liam H. Hecht , age 83, passed away on Mon­day, June 12 in his home in Vi­enna, Vir­ginia. Bill was the beloved hus­band of Su­san Hecht and lov­ing fa­ther of Herb, the late Robert David, Tim, and Jim, and fa­ther-in law of Dana, Jill and Melissa. Bill was a dot­ing grand­fa­ther to Caro­line, Rachel, Will, Rob­bie, Chris­tian, Danny, Han­nah, Sammy, Holly and Johnny, and lov­ing brother-in-law to Jim and Linda Vogt and un­cle to Kather­ine and Mark Vogt.

Bill was born on Septem­ber 13, 1933 in Tifton, Ge­or­gia. Af­ter com­plet­ing his Bach­e­lor’s de­gree, he re­ceived a Master’s of Di­vin­ity from Con­cor­dia Sem­i­nary in St. Louis, Mis­souri and an M.A. de­gree in phi­los­o­phy from Wash­ing­ton Univer­sity. He be­gan his min­istry as a Lutheran pas­tor at Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Ver­non, Ill. He later served as cam­pus pas­tor at the Univer­sity of Ok­la­homa, where he also taught in the Phi­los­o­phy depart­ment. A life­long par­tic­i­pant in pol­i­tics and gov­ern­ment a airs, Bill in 1967 be­came the ex­ec­u­tive di­rec­tor of the Mis­souri State Repub­li­can Party. In 1969 he served as vice pres­i­dent of the Amer­i­can Se­cu­rity Coun­cil. In 1971, he be­came Ex­ec­u­tive As­sis­tant to the chair­man of the House Com­mit­tee on In­ter­nal Se­cu­rity and sub­se­quently left gov­ern­ment to serve as vice pres­i­dent for leg­isla­tive a airs at the To­bacco In­sti­tute. Af­ter work­ing in the Rea­gan for Pres­i­dent Cam­paign, Bill in 1981 started Hecht, Spencer & As­so­ciates, a suc­cess­ful gov­ern­ment re­la­tions rm he has helped to lead to the present day.

Bill re­ceived the Miles Christi (Sol­dier of Christ) Award from Con­cor­dia The­o­log­i­cal Sem­i­nary, Fort Wayne, In­di­ana, the Dis­tin­guished Alumni Award from Con­cor­dia Sem­i­nary, St. Louis; and an honorary Doc­tor of Laws de­gree from Con­cor­dia Univer­sity Wis­con­sin, Me­quon. The Na­tional Cap­i­tal Area Coun­cil of the Boy Scouts of Amer­ica be­stowed the Sil­ver Beaver Award for dis­tin­guished Ser­vice to Youth, and in 2012, Bill was cho­sen as one of three per­sons to re­ceive an “Out­stand­ing Ge­or­gian” com­men­da­tion from the Ge­or­gia state Leg­is­la­ture.

Bill was a pub­lished au­thor, re­spected po­lit­i­cal ad­vi­sor, St. Louis Car­di­nal’s fan, dog lover, and lov­ing and proud fa­ther and grand­fa­ther. He was a reg­u­lar

gure at the Capi­tol Hill Club, where he liked noth­ing more than to share ca­ma­raderie and po­lit­i­cal con­ver­sa­tion with his many won­der­ful friends in Wash­ing­ton D.C.

The fam­ily will re­ceive friends on Wed­nes­day June 14 be­tween 5:30 -8:30 PM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 7426 Idyl­wood Rd. Falls, Church VA. The funeral ser­vice will be held on Thurs­day, June 15 at 1 PM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. The burial will be in Flint Hill Ceme­tery in Oak­ton, VA at 3 PM. In lieu of ow­ers, me­mo­rial con­tri­bu­tions may be made to the Her­bert Wil­liam Hecht schol­ar­ship fund at Con­cor­dia, Sem­i­nary, St. Louis Mis­souri.
