Poll: Most have broad exposure to guns

The Washington Times Daily - - POLITICS - — Jennifer Harper

A wide-ranging new poll from the Pew Research Center, released last week, reveals that 74 percent of all U.S. gun owners say owning a gun is “essential to their freedom.”

Another 73 percent of the owners say they could never see themselves “not owning a gun.” Half say that “all or most of their friends” also own guns.

It also revealed that Americans have broad exposure to guns, whether they personally own one or not. At least two-thirds have lived in a household with a gun at some point in their lives. And roughly 7-in-10 — including 55 percent of those who have never personally owned a gun — say they have fired a gun at some point.

The Pew Research Center survey of 1,269 U.S. gun owners was conducted March 13-27 and April 4-18
