1 mil­lion plus D.C.-area res­i­dents plan July 4 travel

More than a mil­lion res­i­dents of the greater Wash­ing­ton metropoli­tan area are ex­pected to leave the area for July Fourth.

AAA Mid-At­lantic made the pro­jec­tion Wed­nes­day in a state­ment, say­ing the num­ber is a record. The group says it be­gan track­ing the num­ber of hol­i­day trav­el­ers in 2001 and that hol­i­day travel vol­ume in the metro area has in­creased by nearly a third since then.

AAA says 1,109,000 res­i­dents of the area are ex­pected to travel 50 miles or more from home dur­ing the up­com­ing hol­i­day week­end. AAA says that na­tion­ally, 44 mil­lion peo­ple are ex­pected to travel for the hol­i­day.
