Mandate delay is only fair option

The Washington Times Weekly - - Letters To The Editor - JOSEPH MERRITT Silver Spring

The rollout of healthcare.gov has been a complete disaster (“Embarrassing Obama,” Comment & Analysis, Oct. 11). Stories of the site malfunctioning are being reported everywhere. Regular Americans are having extreme difficulty signing up. Even liberals such as Sen. Joe Manchin III, West Virginia Democrat, and TV entertainer Jon Stewart think a delay of the individual mandate would be a good idea.

The radical left wing of the Democratic Party has forced through legislation that was incomplete and flawed. This was the first time in modern history that a social program of this magnitude was passed without even a single vote from the opposition. This flawed program will only lead to increased costs for health care. These costs will be borne by our children.

Even Congress exempted itself from Obamacare. President Obama delayed the mandate for big business; why shouldn’t the mandate be delayed for all of the American people? Delaying the individual mandate is the only fair option. It’s a policy both liberals and conservatives should support. However, the radical left wing doesn’t care about fairness. They have held the party hostage over ideology.

It is time to tell them: No more. The American people want the freedom to choose, not the tyranny of the left-wing radicals. Congress can stop this train wreck before it is too late.
