The director of the Office of Government Ethics resigned from his job last week, nearly six months before the end of his term, saying that his interactions with the Trump administration had been a “disappointment.” Walter Shaub Jr. had clashed with President Trump’s team several times over the past few months, as he urged Trump to fully divest from his business empire. In January, days before Trump’s inauguration, incoming White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus warned Shaub that he was becoming “extremely political”—a comment Shaub took as a “fairly explicit threat,” he said. Shaub said he wasn’t leaving under pressure from the White House, but felt “there isn’t more I could accomplish” in this administration.
