Blood, Sweat, and Pixels

The Week (US) - - Arts 23 - By Jason Schreier (Harper, $16)

Stories about brilliant teams failing spectacularly can be “entertaining as hell,” said Glen Weldon in It’s a shame, then, that journalist Jason Schreier mixes only a few such tales into his survey of how video games are made, focusing more often on squads of coding heroes who push through 100-hour weeks to create boundary-breaking hits. Schreier knows this world deeply; you just wish he’d brought to this project “a saltiness that would provide real insights into its easily wounded, boys-only ethos.”
