The Ordinary Virtues

The Week (US) - - 22 Arts - By Michael Ignatieff (Harvard, $28)

Michael Ignatieff has scaled back his dreams about the world’s future, said Mark Mazower in the Financial Times. After crisscrossing the globe, the scholar and onetime candidate for Canadian prime minister concedes in his new book that it was naïve to push liberal democracy on a world that can’t everywhere sustain it. Instead, he extols governments that simply function and individuals who choose peaceful coexistence over the pursuit of utopia. As a political philosophy, it’s “ardently anti-revolutionary.”
