Graham’s shameless transformation

There are plenty of sellouts in politics, but Sen. Lindsey Graham takes the cake as the “quintessential Washington hack,” said Frank Bruni. The Republican from South Carolina, once one of Donald Trump’s strongest Republican critics, has sunk to a new low in his shameless kowtowing to the president and the Trumpists who now dominate the Republican Party. During the Kavanaugh hearings, Graham’s red-faced rant in defense of the nominee was as outrageously “overwrought” as a diva’s aria at La Scala. Back during the 2016 GOP presidential primaries, Graham called Trump “the world’s biggest jackass” and said, “You know how you make American great again? Tell Donald Trump to go to hell.” Yet now Graham is all in on MAGA. He supports Trump even when the president threatens to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions to halt the Russia investigation, and excuses Trump’s “mendacity, misogyny, racism, and unchecked greed.” What’s driving this cringeworthy about-face? Is Graham auditioning for Sessions’ attorney general job? Whatever his motivations, Graham embodies “our rotten politics,” and its deeply cynical and tribal nature, better than anyone except Trump himself.
