Timber Home Living - - Savvy Shopper - – Brice Cochran

WHILE AN UNCOVERED OUTDOOR SPACE will obviously open a deck or patio up to lots of sunshine and uninterrupted views, keep in mind that once the rain starts to fall or the temps start to drop, that portion of your home will be unusable for a period of time. Here, we share a few smart reasons to consider protecting your outdoor space.

Save on Summer Cooling Costs. If your patio is situated on the sunny side of the house, a roof can help to reduce your summer cooling costs. That shade can keep your home’s interior cooler and reduce the need for air conditioning.

Additional Entertaining Space. With a covered patio, creating an extra living space or outdoor kitchen is a real option. Electricity, lighting and all the conveniences of your indoor space make outdoor entertaining and dining a real joy. You could also install a bar and a substantial barbecue grill.

Structured Lighting. An overhead light, a fan and task lighting are all options with a permanent roof. You can add outlets for strings of light or include a fun chandelier over your outdoor dining area. Your choices in lighting become almost limitless with the protection of a permanent cover.

Outdoor Furniture. A roof allows you to purchase more comfortable outdoor furniture and you can leave it all in place without worry. You can even leave most of your accessories outside all year long and you won’t need loads of storage space for all your outdoor seating in the winter.

Reduce Maintenance. Since your deck is covered, you’ll need to power wash, stain and reseal less frequently. With less moisture and exposure to the elements, your wood will have a longer life expectancy, too.
