Want to make sure your handcrafted piece is the real deal? Here are our top 5 tips.
1. Touch the back of the piece — it should be sanded and finished all the way around with no rough edges. Also, make sure the piece sits (or stands) flat.
2. Open and close the drawers, doors and other movable parts to ensure a tight fit.
3. Look for dovetail joints and stain, both signs of good quality. Staples and plywood are no-nos.
4. Make sure there are no “Made in…” stickers. An Adirondack chair made in China was certainly made by someone, but definitely doesn’t fall into the handmade category we’re talking about.
