WHILE YOU’RE PERUSING pho­tos of beau­ti­ful tim­ber homes, you may think all wood species are the same, and it’s the stain you choose that gives them their lus­ter. Stain does en­hance the color of the tim­bers, but, in fact, dif­fer­ent wood species have dif­fer­ent char­ac­ter­is­tics. Where and how fast they grow af­fects their weight, den­sity, grain and de­cay re­sis­tance, not to men­tion the nat­u­ral tones of the wood. Many types of trees are used to craft tim­ber homes; here are four of the most fre­quently used species and their at­tributes.
