FEDERALSBURG — Three South Caroline Mustang cheer teams will be making the trip to Orlando, Fla., for the AYC National Cheer Competition.

The squads earning a berth at Nationals are the South Caroline Mustangs 12U Red and 14U White teams, along with the Bayside Elite team, which includes members from Caroline, Talbot and Kent counties.

The 31 girls leave for Nationals Wednesday, Dec. 7, and the competition will be held Dec. 10 and 11.

“It is a dream to take these

girls from our small towns to Florida for Nationals,” said Jennifer Holmes who coaches the South Caroline 12U Red team and Bayside Elite team with Heather Jessee. “Heather and I have coached together for nine years, and this is our first time taking a team to Nationals. We are really proud of the girls, and their hard work this season.

“We are trying to provide a program for our girls to grow and be proud,” she said. “This year, we have really exceeded our expectations. We have an Elite Team of 18 girls going, and South Caroline having, not one, but two teams going to Nationals is fantastic.”

Colonel Richardson High School graduate Cleonda Thompson and Kim Cutchin coach the 14U White squad.

The teams earned their berth at Nationals by advancing in the local competition in Salisbury, and then Regionals in Trenton, N.J. The 12U team finished third at Regionals and the 14U squad finished first at Regionals.

“The girls have put in hundreds of hours of practice time with help from so many volunteers and sponsors,” Jessee said. “It has taken a lot of people to put all of this together.

“When we get down there, I hope the girls will be satisfied with their performance, no matter what the outcome is,” she said. “They have worked extremely hard and we are very proud of their effort and accomplishments this season.

“We have quite a few girls who have never been on a plane before, let alone left the state, so this is a really big deal,” she said. “We just want the girls to be proud of making Nationals and take this experience with them throughout their entire lives.”

The South Caroline Mustangs have received donations from Tri-Gas and Oil, H&M Bay Inc., CW Transport, RJ Electric, Higginbottom Orthodontics and Win Transport. Preston Automotive is a cheer program sponsor for the year.
