Comptroller Peter Franchot stopped by the new Ridgely Volunteer Fire Department fire station Monday, July 17, during his visit to Caroline County.

After presenting a proclamation to the department members, Franchot took a tour of the new fire station, which opened in May.

“It is a gorgeous place,” he said. “Hats off to everyone involved in the fundraising and planning.”

The 19,875-square-foot building is located at 101 Sunset Blvd., and sits on 4.2 acres of land, featuring larger, wider bays to accommodate larger equipment. The firehouse also includes an addition for Caroline County Department of Emergency Ser vices.

“I want to present this certificate to Ridgely Volunteer Fire Department for your first-rate emergency service to the greater Ridgely area since 1905 by using trained, dedicated volunteers to ensure a safe environment and rapid response to local emergencies,” he said. “We have special appreciation for the expansion of your facility to accommodate larger equipment, and include an addition to Caroline County Department of Emergency Ser vices.”

The fire department purchased the land for the new station in 1995

for $175,000 and paid off the property by 2009. The department then secured a 30-year loan from the Volunteer Fire Company Assistance Fund through the Maryland State Firemen’s Association for the $2.6 million project.

“All of you in law enforcement, first responders, we are appreciative of the service you provide for your citizens,” Franchot said. “You do more good in a month than many do in a lifetime.”

Joining Franchot on the visit with department members and Ridgely officials were state Sen. Steve Hersey, R-36 Upper Shore, Caroline County commissioners Dan Franklin and Wilbur Levengood and Denise Lovelady representing U.S. Rep. Andy Harris, RMd.-1st.

“You are a fine example of what it really means to be able to come together and provide something for us,” Hershey said.

“We certainly appreciate everything you have done in this community. It does not gone unseen. We are very appreciative of it.”
