Ward smacks first career HR in NC’s rout
— North Caroline High’s softball team crushed St. Thomas More (Del.), 23-0, on March 23 to earn its second win of the season.
Home runs by Ali Ward (2 for 2) and Megan Robbins (3 for 4, two RBIs), along with five RBIs by Brea Bishop (4 for 4) and a twohitter by Mack Werner led the Bulldogs in the blowout.
North Caroline jumped to a 10-0 first-inning lead with leadoff hitter Ward blasting a pitch over the center-field fence for a threerun homer — the first of her career.
“I couldn’t believe I hit it over the fence,” said Ward, who shrugged in disbelief as she rounded the bases. “I didn’t feel it come off the bat. But it feels amazing because this is my first home run.”
The Bulldogs (2-0) added six runs in the second and five runs in the third for a 21-0 lead.
“I was very proud of the team,” North Caroline head coach Andrea Ward said. “They did everything we asked of them. They were swinging at good pitches, connecting and getting big hits. It was a good day.”
Werner kept the Ravens out of the hit column until the fourth inning, allowing two over five innings. She finished with seven strikeouts.
She helped her own cause at the plate, going 5 for 5 with two RBIs. She drove in the team’s first run with a single to left. Bishop plated Robbins and Werner with a double off the fence to make it 3-0. Kendall Dixon followed with an RBI double. Sarah Mast, Hayden Smith and Aubree Strange (4 for 4, four RBIs, three doubles) also drove in runs in the first.
The Bulldogs’ six-run second featured RBIs by Smith, Strange, Robbins and Werner before Bishop capped the inning with another two-run double.
In the third inning, Abbi Trice and Sarah Kintop drove in runs. Azalie Haro added an RBI double in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 22-0. Robbins capped the scoring by blasting a solo homer run in the fifth.
