Ward smacks first ca­reer HR in NC’s rout

— North Caro­line High’s soft­ball team crushed St. Thomas More (Del.), 23-0, on March 23 to earn its sec­ond win of the sea­son.

Home runs by Ali Ward (2 for 2) and Megan Rob­bins (3 for 4, two RBIs), along with five RBIs by Brea Bishop (4 for 4) and a twohit­ter by Mack Werner led the Bull­dogs in the blowout.

North Caro­line jumped to a 10-0 first-in­ning lead with lead­off hit­ter Ward blast­ing a pitch over the cen­ter-field fence for a three­run homer — the first of her ca­reer.

“I couldn’t be­lieve I hit it over the fence,” said Ward, who shrugged in dis­be­lief as she rounded the bases. “I didn’t feel it come off the bat. But it feels amaz­ing be­cause this is my first home run.”

The Bull­dogs (2-0) added six runs in the sec­ond and five runs in the third for a 21-0 lead.

“I was very proud of the team,” North Caro­line head coach An­drea Ward said. “They did ev­ery­thing we asked of them. They were swing­ing at good pitches, con­nect­ing and get­ting big hits. It was a good day.”

Werner kept the Ravens out of the hit col­umn un­til the fourth in­ning, al­low­ing two over five in­nings. She fin­ished with seven strike­outs.

She helped her own cause at the plate, go­ing 5 for 5 with two RBIs. She drove in the team’s first run with a sin­gle to left. Bishop plated Rob­bins and Werner with a dou­ble off the fence to make it 3-0. Ken­dall Dixon fol­lowed with an RBI dou­ble. Sarah Mast, Hay­den Smith and Aubree Strange (4 for 4, four RBIs, three dou­bles) also drove in runs in the first.

The Bull­dogs’ six-run sec­ond fea­tured RBIs by Smith, Strange, Rob­bins and Werner be­fore Bishop capped the in­ning with an­other two-run dou­ble.

In the third in­ning, Abbi Trice and Sarah Kintop drove in runs. Aza­lie Haro added an RBI dou­ble in the fourth in­ning to in­crease the lead to 22-0. Rob­bins capped the scor­ing by blast­ing a solo homer run in the fifth.

North Caro­line 9 Dover (Del.) 2

— Megan Rob­bins dou­bled three times and drove in five runs on March 24, pac­ing North Caro­line High’s soft­ball team to a 9-2 vic­tory over Dover.

Brea Bishop (2-0) tossed a two-hit­ter with 12 strike­outs to earn the win, as the Bull­dogs im­proved to 3-0. Aubree Strange dou­bled and sin­gled, and Ali Ward had a pair of sin­gles for North Caro­line.

N. Caro­line 17 Queen Anne’s 1

— Brea Bishop went 3 for 4 with a three-run homer, and pitched three in­nings of one-hit relief on March 29 to lead the Bull­dogs (4-0, 1-0).

Bishop (3-0) struck out seven and walked one. Megan Rob­bins pitched the first two in­nings for North Caro­line (4-0, 1-0), al­low­ing no hits and strik­ing out three.

Ali Ward (three RBIs) and Ken­dall Dixon (RBI) each went 3 for 4 for the Bull­dogs. Aubree Strange tripled and sin­gled, Macken­zie Werner had a two-run sin­gle, and Lauren Williamson had two sin­gles.
