North Caroline volleyball earns big road triumph
AMERICAN CORNER — The Colonel Richardson girls’ soccer team built an early lead and cruised to a 4-1 victory over North Dorchester Monday, Oct. 2.
The win extended Colonel’s 1A win streak to four, and improved its record to 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the North Bayside.
Scoring for the Colonels included two from freshmen — Reagan Mangum and Emma Carmean — along with senior Annie Harris and sophomore Mackenzie Covey.
The Colonels built a 3-0 halfway through the first half. In the fifth minute, Maddy Christopher fed Harris in the middle, and Harris beat North Dorchester goalkeeper Nicole Waples for a goal to open the scoring.
Harris almost scored a second goal in the 10th minute but her blast from the right wing sailed high over the crossbar. She did contribute to the Colonels’ second goal when she delivered a crossing pass in the goal box to Mangum who scored to give Colonel a 2-0 lead.
The Colonels continued their offensive pressure with Covey and Harris each having scoring chances, but Waples foiled both.
In the 26th minute, Covey increased the lead to 3-0 with a goal off an assist from Mangum. Carmean gave Colonel a 4-0 lead in the second half with a goal in the 69th minute off of an assist from Sarah Gillespie.
“My freshmen got two goal today in large part from my upperclassmen working the ball around and giving them the confidence,” said Colonel head coach Jeremy Roop. “We were working the ball around good like soccer is suppose to be played.
“Annie and Mackenzie are naturals out there,” he added. They sense openings and where to go with the ball to create shots. They also are great passers, and help open the field up with their teammates.”
North Dorchester (0-7, 0-5) made several adjustments at halftime, and spent much of the second half attacking on the offensive end.
Kyla Diggs opened the half with a breakaway down the right side, but her shot went wide of the net. Several minutes later she gained possession on a 50/50 ball, found and opening but she shot went wide again.
Destiny Lane engineered another scoring chance when she found Megan Price in the middle who passed to Brie Bates along the right side. Bates fired a shot, but Colonel goalkeeper Hannah Holmes made the save.
In the closing minutes, Bates got another chance after winning a 50/50 ball. She raced down the right side and uncorked a shot into the top right corner for a goal.
“They kept fighting until the very end,” said Eagles head coach Genna Hatfield. “They never gave up, and got a goal there at the end.
“They came together, and talked about what they needed to work on during halftime,” she added. “They did a really good job until the very end.”
