RIDGELY — North Caroline High’s field hockey team earned its first win of the year with a 2-1 victory Friday over Elkton.

The Bulldogs scored early, then goalie Hayden Smith (11 saves) stonewalled a series of late flurries from the Elks to preserve the victory.

With under the 3 minutes left in a 2-1 game, Elkton made a push to the front of the goalie. Five shots went on goal with Smith stopping all five. The NC defenders battled for the loose ball, and finally forced the Elks to send the ball out of play.

The Bulldogs countered with a run from Kamryn Dixon to switch fields. Caroline kept the pressure in its offensive end for the rest of the game to preserve the victory.

“Hayden did a great job in goal,” North Caroline head coach Kelly Dixon said. “When she played Kent Island, she did phenomenal. She carried that performance into today. I could not ask for her to do a better job.”

The Bulldogs (1-1) began fast with offensive control for much of the first 10 minutes of the match. A loose ball found the stick of Chelsea Cox, and she scored for a 1-0 lead.

Smith kept Caroline in front with consecutive saves in the 15th minute.

North Caroline regained possession and went back on the attack. Off a corner, Kamryn Dixon passed to Victoria DeSimone, and she scored for a 2-0 Bulldog lead in the 20th minute.

“Chelsea’s goal started the momentum for us,” Coach Dixon said. “You got to be hungry and get it in the goal. The girls did that today. They battled to get possession, and it paid off.

“Victoria made a nice shot off the corner,” Coach Dixon added. “That was big for us. The girls have really been working hard, and to get up 2-0 in the first half was a big boost. I’m happy they got rewarded for their hard work.”

Most possessions in the second half stayed in the middle of the field. When the offenses made a serious charge, the defenses turned them aside.

Elkton gained momentum in the 45th minute, when Hannah Moore scored to cut the lead in half to 2-1. Smith halted all remaining threats from the Elks.

“It is a big win for us,” Coach Dixon said. “We had a tough loss to Kent Island, but the girls bounced back with a great effort today. They didn’t hang their heads after that loss. This win is a good morale builder.”
