Florida Recreation Area
Coldwater Recreation Area, located in the Blackwater River State Forest, is a 45-minute drive north of Pensacola, Fla. It’s open year-round; top riding seasons are fall, winter, and spring.
The recreation area offers 69 miles of trails and United States Forest Service roads. The well-marked trails are predominantly flat with sandy footing. Several of the trails follow and cross clean streams, such as Blackwater Creek. The forest contains one of the largest remaining longleaf pine forests in the world.
Prescribed burns in the area promote habitat for quail, red-cockaded woodpeckers, gopher tortoises, and other native species.
Equine facilities include barn stalls; large, covered paneled stalls; and open paneled stalls. Shavings, wheelbarrows, and pitchforks are available. You may also graze your horse on a one-acre paddock, 30 minutes per horse. Other amenities include a 50-foot round pen and concrete wash racks.
Campsites are available with and without water and electricity. Restrooms and showers are nearby. There’s also a dining hall and a covered pavilion. Reservations are required for the stables, campsites, and dining facility.
