Quality Wool Saddle Pad

Trail Rider - - TRAIL & CAMPING GEAR -

Description: The square-skirted Roper 5 Star Saddle Pad from 5 Star Equine Products is made from 100 percent virgin wool felt, which offers moisture-wicking, easy-cleaning properties and also helps to stabilize the saddle with limited cinching. Wear leathers reinforce the withers, topline, and girth areas for protection and durability. Measuring 32 inches wide by 30 inches long, the pad works especially well with shorter saddles. The pad comes in four thickness options, from one-half inch to one inch, and is available in natural, black, cinnamon, and dark chocolate. The tester: Cate Lamm, The Trail Rider’s editorial assistant, a longtime horse owner and rehabilitative trainer. Test results: I tested The Roper 5 Star Saddle Pad on my 16-hand draft-horse cross, Banjo. After measuring my saddle, I found that this model left the recommended one to two inches of material around my saddle’s outer edges.

When the pad arrived, I was impressed with its thickness (seven-eighths of an inch) and tough, durable feel. The wool felt high quality and was soft, not scratchy. I also liked the pad’s flexibility; it wasn’t stiff like some thick, heavy-duty Western pads can be. The pad felt light and easy to use.

Like all 5-Star pads, the Roper is laced into a French Curve that echoes the contours of your horse’s back and allows your saddle to fit more easily. Banjo has medium-high withers and is wide. I was pleased with the way the pad settled onto his back.

pad’s witherrelief cutout.

On the trail, I had good contact with Banjo’s back. Despite the warm weather, the saddle felt secure — there was no slipping of the pad or the saddle, even while going up and down some steep hills.

After removing the pad back at the barn, I was pleased to see that it lived up to its advertised moisture-wicking capabilities, wicking sweat off of Banjo’s back.

This pad comes with an all-natural, dry-clean sponge. It’s a great addition — you can clean the pad without water and it won’t pill or roughen the material. When I used the sponge to clean the pad after my ride, it looked like new again.

The Roper 5 Star saddle pad is a high-quality pad, with a smooth fit. It’s extremely moisture absorbent and has a stylish look. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a well-made pad that will last for years to come. Cost: $191.95. Contact: 5 Star Equine Products, (870) 389-6328; www.5starequineproducts.com
