This holiday season, saddle up, hit the trail with your equine friend, then join the party! Here’s the inside scoop on five outstanding holiday trail rides.
Heart of Dixie Trail Ride Troy, Ala.
News Year’s Ride, December 30, 2016-January 1, 2017 The trails: Heart of Dixie Trail Ride has more than 1,000 acres of land and about 35 miles of intermingled trails. The trails are shaded and sandy, perfect for barefoot horses. On the property are the Conecuh River, streams, duck ponds, and rolling hills. Ride description: This New Year’s Ride includes three guided rides, seven home cooked meals, a live band, bingo, and a church service. Your horse must have a current negative Coggins test. Insider tip: The Johnny Collier Band will play Friday and Saturday night. Cost: $125 per person age 15 and up; $75 for ages 7 to 14; free for children 6 years old and younger. Texas Equestrian Trail Riders Association, Parrie Haynes Equestrian Center, Killen, Texas
Christmas Ride and Party, December 2-4, 2016 The trails: Parrie Haynes Equestrian Center is situated along the Lampasas River on almost 2,000 acres of Hill Country. Trails wind through rolling native prairies, pastures, cedar and oak trees, and crystal-clear streams. Ride description: There’s a Friday night meal, as well as breakfast Saturday and Sunday morning. Saturday night’s meal is catered, so contact host Debby Alley to register, (512) 517-9476. Campsites are available; to reserve your spot, call Ona Trubee, (254) 394-0330. A current negative Coggins test is required for all horses. Shoes or boots are recommended for horses with sensitive feet. Insider tip: Bring a gift to place under the tree for the gift exchange. New Year’s Ride and Party, December 30, 2016-January 1, 2017 The trails: The ranch is located on the edge of 100,000 acres of uninhabited mountain land. Trails offer scenic views, creeks, waterfalls, and wildlife. Ride description: The holiday ride package includes the New Year's Eve party, party favors, three nights of camping, one stall per rider, and a steak dinner. There will also be a New Year’s Day Breakfast. Your horse must have a current negative Coggins test. Insider tip: Snacks will be served at midnight on New Year’s Eve.
