Fi­nally, a phone you can sit on with­out break­ing. Sev­eral smart­phone mak­ers will soon roll out de­vices with flex­i­ble screens that can fold in half with­out break­ing. The fold­able screens could in­crease dis­play space to the size of a mini-tablet, but still fold like a wal­let to re­main the size of reg­u­lar phones. There are ques­tions about the phones’ price and dura­bil­ity, and they’ve proven dif­fi­cult to make: Sam­sung an­nounced plans for a fold­able-screen phone five years ago, but it didn’t give the pub­lic a glimpse of the de­vice un­til this week. If the phones are af­ford­able and sturdy enough, they might be a big step for an in­dus­try that’s run low on in­no­va­tion and also ex­pe­ri­enced a sales slump.
