Estate tax idea

Tulsa World - - Opinion -

Unfortunately, our shortsighted leaders in Washington, D.C., have doubled our national debt twice since 2000 to $20 trillion.

President Clinton and House Speaker Newt Gingrich proved that debt could be reduced. Our present irresponsible course endangers our money and our republic. Services must be properly paid for.

The removal of the estate tax will remove double taxation. The estate tax ought to only be removed when our national debt is below $1 trillion.

I propose a 9 percent tax on estates above $1 million when a citizen is over 65. If he emigrates, the tax is due. If 9 percent is a hardship, then a 1 percent tax each year would be due for 15 years from holder or his heirs.

What do we want our children to inherit? Urge your members of Congress to pass this proposal separately and not in some huge omnibus bill.
