Since he was a Univer­sity of Ok­la­homa fresh­man in 1963, Al Es­chbach has missed only one OU-Texas game. For the 54th time, the long­time Ok­la­homa City Sports An­i­mal host will be at the Cotton Bowl on Satur­day.

“Wow. I'd never thought about that be­fore,” he said. “That's un­be­liev­able.”

Satur­day is the 45th an­niver­sary of the only OU-Texas game that Es­chbach missed. On Oct. 14, 1972, in­stead of cover­ing the Sooners' 27-0 tri­umph over Texas, he was in Blacks­burg, Vir­ginia, for Ok­la­homa State's 34-32 loss to Vir­ginia Tech.

“The OU-Texas week­end in Dal­las isn't what it used to be,” Es­chbach says. “Now, it's all very civil. In the '60s and the '70s, the fans were nuts. The night be­fore the game, a hun­dred peo­ple would go to jail.
