Since he was a University of Oklahoma freshman in 1963, Al Eschbach has missed only one OU-Texas game. For the 54th time, the longtime Oklahoma City Sports Animal host will be at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday.
“Wow. I'd never thought about that before,” he said. “That's unbelievable.”
Saturday is the 45th anniversary of the only OU-Texas game that Eschbach missed. On Oct. 14, 1972, instead of covering the Sooners' 27-0 triumph over Texas, he was in Blacksburg, Virginia, for Oklahoma State's 34-32 loss to Virginia Tech.
“The OU-Texas weekend in Dallas isn't what it used to be,” Eschbach says. “Now, it's all very civil. In the '60s and the '70s, the fans were nuts. The night before the game, a hundred people would go to jail.
