NPS is more than just parks

The Na­tional Park Ser­vice cov­ers more than just land­mark parks such as Yel­low­stone and Yosemite. As an agency of the De­part­ment of the In­te­rior, the Park Ser­vice also man­ages many mon­u­ments and memo­ri­als, as well as other nat­u­ral and his­tor­i­cal sites.

2016 marked the 100th an­niver­sary of the Park Ser­vice, and the pub­lic cel­e­brated by vis­it­ing sites in record num­bers. More than 330 mil­lion peo­ple ex­pe­ri­enced the coun­try’s nat­u­ral beauty and rich his­tory at 417 parks, his­tor­i­cal sites, bat­tle­fields, seashores and recre­ation ar­eas last year.

Th­ese are the top 10 sites vis­ited in 2016 of all prop­er­ties run by the Park Ser­vice, and the num­ber of vis­i­tors, ac­cord­ing to the De­part­ment of the In­te­rior:


Golden Gate was the most pop­u­lar Park Ser­vice des­ti­na­tion in 2016.
