Baltimore Ravens

- by Zac Jackson

The Ravens have held QB Joe

Flacco out of the preseason thus far as he works his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, but on paper this is probably the best receiving corps he has had.

Veteran Steve Smith Sr. is back at practice as he tries to return from a torn Achilles, and the team envisions Smith being productive when the season begins. With an upgraded tight end corps and Smith working underneath routes, the Ravens hope to open downfield routes for free agent pickup Mike Wallace.

Breshad Perriman, a 2015 first-round pick, remains out. Perriman missed his rookie season, but he’s yet to be cleared from his latest knee injury.

The absence of Perriman has opened the door for more reps for fourth-round rookie Chris

Moore. Though he missed the preseason opener with an injury, Moore has caught almost everything thrown his way and is playing his way into the rotation. WR

Kamar Aiken, mostly a special teams player until last season, caught a touchdown pass in last week’s preseason game and also drew a pass interference penalty on a deep pass. Rookie spotlight: The Ravens took OT Ronnie Stanley with the No. 6 pick in April’s NFL draft, and Stanley thus far has been as good as advertised. He’s holding down the all-important left tackle position, and though the team continues to search for veteran line depth it’s not because there are questions about Stanley. Noteworthy: Ryan Mallett and Josh Johnson have had strong preseason showings with Flacco sitting out. The Ravens would probably only keep two quarterbacks on the regular season roster if Flacco wasn’t coming off ACL surgery. ... RB Terrance

West is pushing for a roster spot.
