Despite leading the majors with a 0.38 ERA in spring training, right-hander Masahiro Tanaka said he was nervous about his third opening-day start. Perhaps with reason.

The Tampa Bay Rays rocked him for seven runs on eight hits, including two home runs, in 22⁄ innings. 3

“I just didn’t have good control over myself,” Tanaka said through a translator. “It just comes back to being a little bit too hyped up.”

It was Tanaka’s shortest outing since he gave up seven runs (five earned) in 12⁄ innings at Boston 3 on Sept. 27, 2014, in the shortest outing of his major league career. It was the shortest start by a Yankees pitcher on opening day since Ron Guidry went 22⁄ innings in 3 1983 at the Seattle Mariners.

“Today he didn’t have his command,” manager Joe Girardi said. “It’s hard to figure out. It’s one game. Don’t make too much of it.”

It was the Yankees’ sixth consecutive opening-day loss, a franchise record.

uThe youth movement is on. The opening-day lineup included catcher Gary Sanchez, first baseman Greg Bird, shortstop Ronald Torreyes and right fielder Aaron Judge, who are all 24. Only twice before in Yankees history had the opening-day lineup included four players under 25 — in 1914 and 1932. The last time the lineup even had three players under 25 was 1971.
